History of Parish:

St Antony's, was provided in 1956 as a Mass centre for Catholics living on the new housing estate then being developed in the area between Westbury-on-Trym and the railway line along the city boundary. Mgr Canon Hookway, at the church of the Sacred Heart, Westbury-on-Trym had a temporary building erected on a plot of land at the junction of Satchfield Crescent and Keinton Walk. Fr Francis O’Leary was responsible for the new mission. The Catholic convent of the Good Shepherd at Hallen, adjacent to Henbury, had its own resident chaplain who was able to help Fr O’Leary at weekends.(The convent closed in 1980.) In 1957 a council house was made available to Fr.O’Leary who thus became the first parish priest, and the house in Edington Grove became the first presbytery. Fr O’Leary was moved to Bath in 1963 and Fr (now Canon) James O’Brien replaced him. During Fr. O’Brien’s time the present presbytery was built adjoining the church. Fr Gerald Rogers succeeded Fr O’Brien and remained until 1978. During this period the parish hall was built and the permanent atrium (porch) was built to improve the entance to the church. Fr Rogers was replaced by Fr William O’Callaghan who remained at St Antony until 1985. The Henbury housing estate, in common with other council estates developed in the immediate post-war years, has seen a decline in the number of residents, and this trend is reflected in the decrease in the number of parishioners at St Antony.
