St James Priory - Final Concert Before Renovation

27 February 2009

Bristol’s oldest building St James Priory is closing in July for vital and exciting restoration work, which is expected to take between 18 months and two years to complete.  So what better way to experience the unique atmosphere of St James than with some top quality music inspired by architecture.  Next month's wonderful concert by the Exultate Singers is entitled ‘Stone Shall Sing’.

The church’s beautiful Norman architecture and wonderful, warm acoustic make it one of Bristol’s precious buildings but it is in urgent need of restoration and repair.

In this concert Exultate Singers explores the relationship between architecture and music. Featuring some gems of the choral repertoire written by composers who have been particularly influenced by the buildings in which they worked - including Bruckner, Palestrina, Gibbons, Stanford, Howells, Tallis, Gabrieli and a piece specially written for Exultate Singers by Philip Moore - the concert gives the chance to reflect on the priory church’s beauty before it is hidden from public gaze for several months. The concert will include a collection in aid of the St James Priory Appeal.

The concernt is on 7 March in St James Priory, Whitson Street, Bristol BS1 3NZ.  It begins at 7.30 pm.

Tickets are just £10.00, £8.00 for concessions and £2.00 for under 18s.  Buy yours from the Providence Music shop, 1 St Georges Road, Bristol BS1 5UL on 0117 927 6536 or online.
