An extraordinary multi-media event will take place in Bristol on Friday
31 March 2006. A Radius of Curves is the World Premiere of Martin
Kiszko's music and film odyssey exploring Isambard Kingdom Brunel's
inspiration, vision and creation of the Great Western Railway - to this
day still the main public transport artery connecting Bristol and the
South West to London.
Climb on board with composer Martin Kiszko, the Emerald Ensemble and
Exultate Singers conducted by David Ogden for the world premiere of A
Radius of Curves - a remarkable musical and filmic journey celebrating
the construction of Brunel’s Great Western Railway and the pioneering
spirit of railway travel in its heyday.
As we speed along at the Brunelian intercity speed of 45mph, experience
Brunel's hopes and setbacks during the building of the track.
Join Brunel in celebrating the fruition of his dream - taking 'a coffee
at speed' on a seven-foot broad gauge track with stoking fires and
steam over the challenging gradients and geological strata between
London and Bristol.
Like many of Brunel's works, A Radius of Curves brings together some of
the best talent available in the South West including Dave McCormick
Feature Editor of Wallace and Gromit's The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Martin Kiszko has used text and inspiration from Brunel's diaries,
sketchbooks and calculations to create a popular cantata and
multi-media performance event for soloist, choir of fifty singers,
orchestra, and a remarkable film of the journey between Paddington and
London edited by Rick Holbrook and David McCormick.
Martin is an award-winning composer of over 200 film and television
scores, and received the Academy of Composers' 2004 Composer of the
Year Award. The event also features the paintings of celebrated railway
artist John Austin. Martin Le Poidevin sings the baritone solo role of
Brunel. Sam Adams Nye - BBC 2005 Young Chorister of the Year - will
also be singing a suite from Britten's Ceremony of Carols, and the
solos from Tippett's A Child of our Time.
A Radius of Curves is a unique event in the year-long celebration of
the life and work of Brunel - Bristol's most famous adopted son. It is
one of over 60 arts projects supported by Brunel 200.
