16 March 2010
Bishop Declan has spoken about the
announcement made earlier today (16 March).
Bishop Declan said: “Pope Benedict XVI has confirmed he is visiting the United Kingdom in September. I am sure he will receive a warm welcome not only from the Catholic community but also from many other people. I hope the visit of the Holy Father will lead to a strengthening of ecumenical bonds and a development of good relationships with people of other faiths and all who are working for the common good.
“Many people will remember the visit of Pope John Paul II and the huge crowds that greeted him. This visit will not be a long and the Pope will visit fewer places. Nevertheless it will be an opportunity to reflect on how our faith influences the way we live our lives and relate to one another to enable all people to flourish.
“This occasion will culminate in the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman an outstanding person who exemplifies the meaning of pastoral care for all people flowing from a deep commitment to God, prayer and learning.
“Together with the other bishops of the UK I look forward to greeting the Holy Father when he comes to our countries.”
