Blessed be the Net

21 May 2009

University of Bristol Catholic Chaplain and local broadcaster Father Robert King was in London on Monday (18 May) to hear from Father Frederico Lombardi SJ the Director of the Vatican Press Office.

Father Lombardi gave a speech to journalists and communications professionals, as the Catholic Church in England and Wales looks ahead to World Communications Day this weekend (24 May)

Father Lombardi delivered a Roman perspective on the problems and benefits of news communications.  He encouraged use of new media for “positive interactivity”.

Father Robert told cliftondiocese.com: “Father Lombardi spoke of a continuity of openness to evolving media between John Paul II and Benedict XVI.  Pope John Paul II took him by surprise in declaring TV to be blessed, for its good and bad, because it facilitated a communion between him and people throughout the world.

“Pope Benedict has embraced the cyber age with the introduction of a dedicated YouTube channel as a means of communication.  This is just the beginning of a long journey to greater use of contemporary media. With prudence we must have hope and trust as we continue to proclaim the Gospel.”
