Bristol has officially been awarded Fairtrade City status. An event to
celebrate the presentation of the award was held on board the ss Great
Britain, with a delicious Fairtrade breakfast provided by the Co-op and
Cafe Unlimited. It was attended by over 100 people from Bristol-based
businesses, schools, community organisations, media and charities, as
well as MPs, Councillors and the Lord Mayor. The Clifton Diocese was
represented by Father Robert King, Interfaith Officer and Chaplain to
the University of Bristol together with Debbie Forge, Pastoral
Assistant at St Pius X, Withywood, Bristol.
Father Robert said, “Bristol's arrival at Fairtrade City status is a
wonderful achievement for a city with an historic reputation for trade:
both just and unjust. It is a cause of joy and excitement for the
Clifton Diocese and the people of Bristol as we celebrate the advent of
a new era of justice in world trade.”
Speakers at the event included Valerie Davey MP, Councillor John Bees
speaking on behalf of the Leader of the Council, Ian Bretman of the
Fairtrade Foundation and Regina Joseph, a Fairtrade banana grower from
Dominica in the Windward Islands.
Regina said, “When you buy Fairtrade, you are helping people to have a
better life, for children to go to school and to have a better life in
future. We work hard to produce our Fairtrade banana and put in all the
efforts to guarantee a good quality.”
The award was presented to The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of
Bristol, Councillor Simon Cook, who accepted it on behalf of the people
of Bristol. He presented Regina with a Bristol Blue Glass coat of arms
of the city as a sign of our partnership and commitment to Fairtrade
for the future.
There is an opportunity to buy fairly traded goods on the first Sunday
of the month after every Mass at Clifton Cathedral. Free copies of the
Fairtrade Directory for Bristol will be given away on the first Suday
in April.
