Brother Roger Remembered

Following Tuesday’s (16 August) shocking death of Brother Roger, the founder and leader of the Taizé ecumenical community, a special Mass will be offered for the repose of his soul at St Nicholas of Tolentino Catholic Church, Lawford’s Gate, Easton, Bristol on Sunday 21 August.

The Mass will be celebrated by Father Richard McKay the Parish Priest at St Nicholas of Tolentino. The Mass begins at 10.30 am. All are welcome.

Father Richard will be present at Brother Roger’s funeral on Tuesday 23 August at 1.00 pm (BST) in Taizé. He will take a message to the Taizé community from Right Reverend Declan Lang, Bishop of Clifton, on behalf of the Clifton Diocese.

Father Richard said, “I first visited Taizé in 1974, when as a young priest I was searching my ‘call within a call’. Since then I have visited Taizé around twenty times, on my own, with friends and leading youth and parish groups. Taizé is truly, as Pope John Paul II described, ‘a springtime within the Church’, a gentle and powerful fruit of the Holy Spirit drawing Christians and others together in the common search for God, for peace and unity.

“I met Brother Roger a few times and always saw him when I was in Taizé. He was a presence of holiness in his gentleness and vision, utterly committed to helping people search for the divine and for the human, and to engage in both contemplation of God and struggle for a more united world. He is one of the great saints of our time - indeed of any time.

“We have lost an inspiring Christian leader, but gained an enduring Saint who will work for the unity of the church and faith of young people. May he rest in peace, Alleluia!”

A Taizé style ‘Prayer around the Cross’ will take place on Friday 27 August in St Nicholas of Tolentino Church at 8.00 pm in memory of Brother Roger and to intercede for the community and mission he founded. Again, all are welcome.
