Business Studies staff at St Brendan’s Catholic Sixth Form College have
just received an award for the best AS level results in the country.
The Good Schools Guide A Level Awards 2005, however, was quite
specific, it was in the non-selective state schools category, for girls
only, and recognised ‘the sustained quality of the A level teaching’.
The Good Schools Guide has the following principles
• to be independent in their judgements of schools, and to take no money from them directly or indirectly;
• to view schools from a parent's point of view, and to choose schools
for the Guide on the basis of what parents say about them;
• to define good schools as schools that are good for the children and
parents that they serve, and not to be too influenced by academic
results alone.
Consequently, St Brendan’s is delighted to be selected. Head of
Business Studies at the college, Nigel Falkender said, ‘It came as a
huge surprise because we didn’t know we were being considered. We don’t
target the girls; this has come about through our normal teaching. The
girls have certainly set a challenge for the boys, though!’
The selectors based the award on an analysis of students’ individual
performances, looked at the popularity of the subject relative to
similar schools and at individual student performances in comparison
with their average exam score.
Nigel said, ‘It looks like a complicated formula to determine the
winners, we are pleased to be recognised for doing our everyday job.’
