CAFOD Celebrating 50 Years

22 January 2012

To mark CAFOD’s (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) 50th anniversary, Westminster Cathedral will play host to 1,400 CAFOD supporters and volunteers from all over England and Wales for a Mass of Thanksgiving and Celebration on Saturday (28 January). Bishop Declan and parishioner from the West of England will be part of the celebrations. Tony Vassallo the Clifton CAFOD Manager writes with the news.

Over 25 bishops will attend and concelebrate the Mass at 2.00 pm with Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, President of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, and Archbishop of Westminster.

Over 70 CAFOD supporters from our diocese will be travelling to London to take part in the celebration and five of our priests will concelebrate the Mass.

Father Richard McKay, Parish Priest of St Nicholas of Tolentino in Bristol, said: “I am delighted and am privileged to give thanks to God for the great work of CAFOD over these last 50 years, by sharing in and concelebrating the Mass at Westminster Cathedral.”

The Mass will mark the official launch of CAFOD’s 50th anniversary year with our supporters in England and Wales. The anniversary Mass will be a memorable and participatory liturgy which, as well as being about gratitude and celebration, gives voice to those CAFOD works with in the global south.

After Mass, there will be a reception in Westminster Cathedral Hall where it will be possible to meet with supporters, volunteers and key CAFOD contacts.

Earlier on in the day there will be a chance for supporters to learn more about CAFOD and the work that it does as all attendees are invited to an open morning in Romero House from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm which will include presentations from teams and individuals, and a chance to have a tour of our environmentally-friendly office and an exhibition on CAFOD’s 50 years.
