While the ceasefire holds in the Middle East, CAFOD is continuing its
relief effort in Lebanon by supporting families as they try to settle
back in their homes and get on with their daily lives.
CAFOD's partner, Caritas Lebanon, is providing a range of basic needs,
such as food parcels and schooling equipment, to 4000 families affected
by the recent conflict. Caritas Lebanon will also provide tuition and
registration fees for children to restart school.
Colette Fearon, CAFOD's Regional Manager for Asia and the Middle East
said, "While the fighting may have stopped, people are still suffering
from the effects of the war.
"When the bombing started many had to flee their homes with nothing and
now they are returning to nothing. Many have found their homes and
businesses damaged or destroyed and they are unable to support
themselves and their families. Caritas Lebanon will ensure they have
food to eat and that their children can return to school."
Another priority for CAFOD's partner is helping people regain their
livelihoods so they can support their families. Caritas Lebanon is
providing grants to 4000 farmers and 500 fishermen to buy essential
equipment that was destroyed during the conflict.
A further 500 small businesses will also receive support to reopen and
restart work in areas such as handicrafts, mechanics, electronics and
workshops. Although Caritas Lebanon will not be directly involved in
rebuilding destroyed homes, it does have plans to support 500 families
in repairing minor damage to their houses.
During the month-long conflict, Caritas Lebanon worked tirelessly to
help people from all communities and the organisation now plans to
build on this by assisting communities of different faiths in the
recovery phase.
Tim Aldred, CAFOD's humanitarian co-ordinator, said, "It is our hope
that working in this way may be a symbol of co-operation between
different communities at a potentially sensitive time."
CAFOD has pledged £325,000 to its partners in the Middle East,
including Caritas Lebanon. CAFOD supporters can donate through their
local parish or by calling 0500 858 885.
