Everyone involved in life at Clifton Cathedral in Bristol is looking
forward to Christmas Day – not unusual for a Cathedral – but this year
BBC One will be live in Clifton for the morning Mass.
The broadcast is the culmination of BBC One’s ‘Stranger in the Manger?’
Advent series. The series began in Clifton Cathedral with Mass
celebrated by the Cathedral Dean, Canon Robert Corrigan on the first
Sunday of Advent (27 November)
Bishop Declan, who will be celebrating Christmas Morning Mass said, “I
am very pleased the BBC has chosen to come to Clifton Cathedral for the
celebration of Mass on Christmas Day. It recognises the beauty of the
building and the quality of the liturgy celebrated by the priests and
people.”
Graham Kendrick, the composer of the popular ‘Shine, Jesus Shine’, is
the presenter of the series. He will perform his song ‘Thorns in the
Straw’ during Mass.
Bristol-born television producer David Taviner is in charge of the
‘Stranger in the Manger?’ series, he said, “Many people know Graham’s
song ‘Shine Jesus Shine’ but not so many realise that he’s been writing
worship songs and hymns for more than thirty years. As well as leading
worship at a wide variety of Christian events he is also a great
songsmith - able to combine a memorable tune with a thought-provoking
lyric. On Christmas Day he will be singing just such a song - ‘Thorns
in the Straw’ - which acknowledges that Christmas and Easter are closer
than we think!”
Richard Jeffrey-Grey, Director of Music at Clifton Cathedral said,
“It's always a joy and privilege to welcome people to be with us at the
Cathedral at any time, and this Christmas we welcome the world to see
and hear what we do to welcome Jesus into our world. We hope that,
whether in the Cathedral or watching on BBC One, you feel free to sing
with us. Traditional carols form part of what we will be doing, as well
as items with choir, brass, percussion and organ. But most of all we
will be singing with our hearts. So, join us!”
The broadcast from Clifton Cathedral will be on BBC One at 10.00 am on Christmas Day. All are welcome to attend.
