Catholic Women’s League – An Update

Relief & Refugee Committee
The CWL has been involved in refugee work since World War One and the need today is greater than ever. While recognised nationally, the Committee relies for its funds entirely on donations from League members. The number of applications received from asylum seekers each month has greatly increased. These people are destitute as they are not allowed to work and cannot claim any benefits. How can we in this Branch help?

Recently the Committee has had two requests from Bristol Refugee Action for help for young women about to give birth or who already have a young baby. The need is for clothes, cots and prams. The Committee did give the Agency a small donation from their limited funds. Perhaps Sections within the Branch could be involved supporting the Bristol Refugee Action by gathering together items for babies and very young children. Maybe, parishes that don’t have a CWL Section would be willing to help. The address is Bristol Refugee Action, 38 Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3QD.

Inter Faith
At St Dunstan’s, Keynsham, the local Baptist anniversary meeting heard a talk on “Women in the Bible”. This theme will be echoed at the July meeting of the Cheltenham Inter Faith group who are having a talk on “Women’s experience of religion”.

AGM
The Branch held its AGM at Sacred Hearts, Cheltenham. The meeting was well attended with members coming from as far apart as Woodchester and Bridgwater. The day began with Mass which was a special Mass, prepared by the women of France. The theme was “Let us weave ties for peace.”

The new National President, Sheila Jennings was present and presided over the election of officers. Kate Doyle had completed her term of office as Branch President and is succeeded by Pat Doyle. The new Vice President is Mrs Eileen Agnew of St Bonaventure’s, Bishopston, Bristol. The branch is delighted to have two volunteers. Due to ill health our Treasurer, Pamela Flavin, has resigned. Elizabeth McNamara returns for another spell as Treasurer. Elizabeth was one of the members who drew up the new CWL constitution last year.
