Celebrating the International Day of Families

Did you know that Saturday 15 May 2004 is the International Day of Families? This annual celebration was inaugurated in 1994, the International Year of the Family, to enable local communities to highlight the importance of family life and the various ways in which families can be supported. This year's theme is Framework for Action.

To help parishes mark the day, the Listening 2004: My Family My Church project has produced some ideas for a family Mass. An order of service for celebrants, two take-home sheets for families and a list of further ideas for celebrating the day can all be downloaded free of charge from the Listening 2004 website.

"We've tried to focus on the theme ‘Framework for Action’ in the materials we've prepared," said Elizabeth Davies, Marriage & Family Life Project Officer. "One of the take-home sheets looks at why the Church values families so highly, and this is the kind of framework that helps us all when we think about ways to celebrate, support and nourish family life."

Parish families are also invited to think about the proposals recently put forward by the European Catholic Bishops Conference, COMECE. In 'A family strategy for Europe' COMECE have identified five key ways to help make Europe one of the most family-friendly areas in the world. "We were very interested to read the Bishops’ proposals and invite families to consider them for themselves,” commented Ms Davies.

You can take part in Listening 2004 at a parish near you. Ask your local diocesan coordinator for details.
