Celebrations at St Brendan’s

Once again students from St Brendan’s Catholic Sixth Form College in Brislington, Bristol are celebrating their exam results with nine students each gaining four passes at grade A.

Katherine Black, Rosana Ford, Edward Hayes, Angie Harrison, Chris Palmer, Laurence Pike, Mathangi Ramakrishnan, Peter Scolding, Felicity Allen, Katherine Black and Angie Harrison gained the first of their As last year as lower sixth students and added three more this year. They completed their perfect performances by gaining more As at AS level in two different subjects

Ed Hayes is particularly pleased with his perfect 100% pass rate in all of his six further maths units which obviously gained him his A pass. Mathangi Ramakrishnan and Sandy Kilpatrick both achieved their goals in being accepted at Oxford University. Mathangi (Meg) who disagrees with those who think A levels are getting easier by saying, “It might be different but definitively not easy to get As”, will not able to take up her place, having studied in England for most of her life she went to India for two years and will not have the three years residency she needs to take up her place until next year. Instead she is looking forward to taking a gap year working for Sharp, the electronics company, whilst soaking up the atmosphere in Oxford.

Sandy Kilpatrick was unable to collect his results as he was working in north Wales as a teacher leader at an outdoor activity centre. Sandy’s mother was delighted saying, “I’m glad he was away as I’m sure all the media pressure would have added to his concern.”

Emotion as always was running high for students at the St Brendan’s – over 480 upper sixth students were involved in more than 1500 subject entries at A Level, a total of 1100 students took either AS or A2 level examinations this summer and all received their results today, some too afraid to open the envelopes!

Most achieved what they had anticipated – or better. There was support on hand for those who didn’t or who found the tension a little too much. Over 300 students will have secured their places at University either for this autumn or for next, after taking a gap year.

Four lower sixth students gained five AS passes at grade A: Victoria Halhead, Joanna Black, Lucy Bence-Wilkins and James Armstrong with an additional 14 other students gaining four As at AS.

Derek Bodey, Principal of the College, said, “We are delighted for our students. These results will enable almost all of them to proceed to the Higher Education course or employment for which they have applied. It’s always a joy for us to see so many smiling faces, today is about youngsters working hard to achieve their goals. We should allow them to enjoy their well earned successes.”
