The 80th anniversary of one of our Weston-super-Mare parishes was celebrated with a series of special events in Somerset’s sunshine coast. Peter Ottley’s compiled this report for
cliftondiocese.com.
The church was officially opened on 6 June 1929, the Feast of Corpus Christi that year, and blessed by Bishop Ambrose Burton.
Our celebrations began on Trinity Sunday when the parish renewed their Baptismal and Confirmation promises, with a special emphasis on those who received these sacraments at Corpus Christi.
A special school Mass was held on the (old) Feast of Corpus Christi and celebrations continued with a concert by the Caprione Choir, a local ecumenical group, who entertained the
Mayor and Mayoress of Weston-super-Mare, parishioners and other guests with a mix of light religious and secular music.
After the concert the audience was treated to a preview of the 80th anniversary flower festival. The colourful flower festival was open to the public for four days with visually stunning displays. The scent of the flowers filled our beautifully decorated church. Floral displays were based on the theme of our diocese’s ‘
Called to be a People of Hope’ pastoral guidelines. There were displays dedicated to Mary, a Woman of Hope; St Peter, the Rock of Hope; and St Paul, the Apostle of Hope.
During the Sunday Masses a new hand-made banner for the parish was blessed. The weekend celebrations concluded with a parish family picnic in the park opposite the church. To conclude the festivities we will renew our wedding vows and have a special blessing for everyone else in our parish family in two weeks time - for single, widowed, divorced, separated, religious and clergy.
