Cheddar and Tea

You may well have seen the press or on television that the Wavering Down House in beautiful Cross near Axbridge in Somerset will be open to visitors this summer. Wavering Down displays hundreds of gifts and paintings donated to the late entertainer Frankie Howerd who lived in the house.

The proceeds of the summer’s open days are donated to local charities. One local group that will benefit is the Catholic parish in Cheddar - Our Lady Queen of the Apostles. Parishioners have been invited to provide cream teas on Saturday 10 June with the promise that profits will be available for parish activities.

There is to be an art exhibition in Cross Village Hall, opposite Wavering Down House, featuring displays of the work of Weare school pupils. This will be accompanied by Frankie Howerd’s photograph albums and his school reports.

Advertising for the open days has been huge, according to Cheddar’s Parish Priest, Father Peter Slocombe who says:

“We have been told to expect in excess of 200 visitors – it may even exceed 300 depending on the weather. That’s an awful lot of tea, coffee and cakes!”

This is the second invitation for the Cheddar parishioner who last year raised over £1000.
