Christ College Goes Global

27 April 2009

Phileas Fogg famously, if fictitiously, travelled around the world in eighty days, but Year 7’s at Cheltenham’s Christ College took part in something almost as impressive when they studied the geography, customs, art and sports of a variety of different countries during a dedicated day of learning.

Students sampled foods from different countries, and enjoyed the unfamiliar tastes and textures.

Religious practices and customs from other lands were studied with great interest.

Famous works of art from different countries were reproduced.  Each student painted a rectangular section from an original image, and when these were placed together, the complete painting was revealed.

Pupils learned to play Kabaddi and Kho Kho, games which were experienced during a recent visit to Hyderabad by older students.

Polish sports were represented by strongest man endurance events such as carrying car tires and wheeling barrows full of shot.

The day culminated with a spectacular display of the students’ work, showing all they had learned during their virtual travels.

Christ College’s Deputy Head Tracey Cummings said: “Since September, Year 7 have been working on developing their learning habits across the curriculum, and this day was a great opportunity for them to use the skills they have been practising, as well as having fun learning about other countries.”
