Churchdown Prepares for the Papal Visit

5 August 2010

Parish preparations for the Holy Father’s historic visit next month are well under way in our Churchdown parish.  The community at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour have organised two events to help local people prepare for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI.

Churchdown’s Parish Priest Father Kevin Hennessey said: “Please do come along - everyone is welcome.

“On Saturday 21 August at 10.30 am there will be discussion in our parish hall about the papal visit to help us to think and prepare how to answer questions people may ask us. Clearly the Catholic Church will be big news as we look forward to welcoming Pope Benedict XVI, and I think we should be asking ourselves: ‘What would be your response if asked about your faith?’

“On Tuesday 31 August at 7.30 pm Father Michael McAndrew, the Clifton Diocese Papal Visit Coordinator, will give a talk about the teachings of Pope Benedict XVI.  Jim Padden will also give a presentation about Cardinal John Henry Newman, who will be beatified by Pope Benedict during Mass in Cofton Park, Birmingham on Sunday 19 September. This meeting will be in St Mary’s School on Cheltenham Road East in Churchdown.”

You can find out more about the Churchdown preparation by calling Father Kevin on 01452 713254.

Father Michael McAndrew said: “I’m looking forward to visiting Churchdown and meeting people there as we prepare together to welcome the Holy Father to our countries next month.”

Of course it’s not just our Churchdown parish that’s busy preparing for the papal visit.  Last month we heard from our Stroud parish where excitement is brewingYoung local Catholics are also busy ahead of next month's special time.
