This Lent, the international aid agency, CAFOD, is calling on
supporters to give up something for a day to help raise money for some
of the poorest people in the world.
CAFOD supporters in our diocese are being encouraged to forgo their
usual chocolate treat or Friday night visit to the cinema this Lent and
instead give the money to charity.
Tony Vassallo, CAFOD’s Diocesan Manager for the Clifton Diocese,
explained that the funds would be used for projects like one which
provides water for families living in shantytowns just outside Peru’s
capital, Lima.
“It never rains in Lima because of the desert-like climate and water is
in short supply”, said Tony. “Shantytowns have sprung up around the
capital, with the most basic of homes being erected on the
mountainsides surrounding Lima everyday.”
“But, thanks to the generous support of parishioners and school
children around the Clifton Diocese, CAFOD has been able to fund a
project run by our partner, Columban Fathers, to bring water right into
the homes of these shantytown dwellers.”
By providing pumps and piping for a water supply to San Juan de
Lurigancho, a shantytown high on the mountainside on the outskirts of
Lima, CAFOD has helped improve the lives of Christian Unocco and his
family. Christian’s father, who sharpens knives for a living, used to
carry two huge barrels of water, up the hill from Lima, in scorching
weather every day. “The barrels weighed a lot even without water,” he
said. “My back ached from the weight. Now we have water in our home.”
Tony said: “Water is so important to us but how often do we take its
availability for granted? Unfortunately, for many around the world easy
access to running water is a luxury. This simply shouldn’t be the
case.”
“Lent Fast Day this year falls on 10 March and is a great opportunity
for people in the Clifton Diocese to help CAFOD continue to support
organisations like the Columban Fathers that have helped so many in
Peru and all over the world.”
