Unsure what to get our loved ones last Christmas, many of us in the
Clifton Diocese, which covers Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and
Bristol, found inspiration in school books, chickens and even toilets,
thanks to the Catholic aid agency, CAFOD.
In the run up to Christmas, parishioners, school pupils and individuals
in the Clifton Diocese raised a massive £101,019 to help the most poor
and vulnerable in the developing world by buying gifts from CAFOD’s
World Gifts catalogue.
The most popular items on your Christmas gift lists were school starter
kits. At £7 each, 1632 packs of classroom equipment were bought. The
starter kits include blackboards, pens, pencils, exercise books,
uniforms and school bags. As education is one of the most reliable
routes out of poverty, this simple and inexpensive gift could make all
the difference to children in developing countries. Rather than
continue to live from hand-to-mouth, going to school will help children
develop the skills to secure a good job and a steady income.
Another popular item was a brood of chickens for £21. Thanks to the
generosity of the people of the Clifton Diocese, parents in poor
countries like El Salvador, will be able to ensure their children have
a healthy diet. Not only will they benefit from nutritious eggs, but
the chickens’ offspring can be sold at the market giving the families
extra income to spend on other essentials such as clothes or school
fees.
CAFOD’s supporters also bought 753 emergency shelter kits, 174 cows and 457 latrines.
Tony Vassallo, CAFOD’s Diocesan Manager for the Clifton Diocese, said:
“What better way to reach out to the world’s poor than by giving a gift
that will truly make a difference to their lives. In this fast-paced,
got-to-have–it-all consumer age, the people of the Clifton Diocese have
been tremendously generous in putting others before themselves.”
CAFOD works in over 60 countries and help millions of people regardless
of race or religion to overcome poverty, hunger, illness and injustice.
World Gifts ranged from between £7 and £500 and focused on education,
health, shelter and agricultural projects across Africa, Asia, South
East Asia, South Eastern Europe (Serbia) and Latin America. CAFOD
raised over of £1.5 million through its World Gifts catalogue.
