Clifton Diocese Vocations Stories - Father Gerry Walsh

Father Gerry’s story tells of how God calls and shapes us through many experiences to discern our place in his Church. As the example of other priests’ ministry inspired him, perhaps his story might help you find the courage to answer God’s call.

Father Robert King, Clifton Diocese Vocations Director

Father Gerry’s story:

Looking back over my life I can see many steps along the road which led to ordination as a priest at St John the Baptist, Trowbridge. My journey began with the call of God, given at my baptism, to holiness.

My time at Exeter University from 1980 to 1983 had a profound effect on my journey to priesthood. Not only the Catholic friends I made but also the example of the Chaplain, Father Reg. The scriptures took on a new importance for me.

The parish of Our Lady of the Angels in Notting Hill, London was another important step towards priesthood. Father Michael Hollings both inspired me and encouraged me to take an active role in the life of the parish. The memory of his passion for social justice remains an inspiration for many.

Time spent helping missionary priests learn English in Zambia and the faith of local Catholics inspired me to explore new avenues in discerning God’s will. This further grew as I returned to the lively parish of St John’s in Trowbridge. The ordination of local parishioner, Father John Cunningham, gave me the courage to take heart and talk to the Clifton Diocese Vocations Director about priesthood. A call that lead to me applying for the Clifton Diocese, seminary and ordination as a priest.
