If someone were to ask you if you had a vocation, you would probably say
no, if you weren't a priest or perhaps a teacher or member of the
medical profession. However if you look at the true meaning of the
word which stems from the Latin word " vocare" meaning "to call" and
you link this to our belief that God has a plan for all of us, then you
could conclude that actually, we all have a vocation. We are all called
by God to live a certain life, with good times and bad.
Early this year, the Clifton Vocation Team was formed. It comprises a
broad spectrum of men and women of different ages, some married, some
parents, some single, some Priests, some Deacons, some from Religious
Life. But all committed to promoting the culture of vocation within our
diocese.
Cynics might say that we are just a think-tank to improve the number of
Priestly vocations within the diocese. This would, of course, be an
excellent outcome of our work but to say that this was our main aim
would be to miss the point made earlier, that we need to remember that
we all have a vocation.
If, from an early age, we were all regularly encouraged to feel that
God is calling us to serve Him in a special way in our lives, we would
all feel more self-confident and we might make difficult decisions in
our lives more easily in the light of this confidence. Most importantly
we would know that God's call to us, in whatever direction, was the
right thing for us for some reason, even if it didn't feel like it!
We have just celebrated Vocations Sunday during May. Let us reflect and
rejoice about our individual vocations and let us pray that the work of
the Clifton Vocation Team leads to an increased culture of vocations
within our Church. If this leads to a heightened interest in Priesthood
and Religious Life, then we will celebrate that, but we also hope that
any change we can help to enhance this culture will provide comfort and
support for all of us and will enhance our relationship with God and
each other within our Church community.
