Clifton’s Peru Appeal Boosted

Bishop Declan received a donation to the Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal. A generous £8000 has been raised by the people of the Bristol East Deanery.

Father Bernard Massey, Dean of Bristol East, handed over a cheque to Bishop Declan. Bishop Declan said, “This donation is a most generous gift from people in the east of Bristol. I know the people of the San Antonio parish in Moquegua will appreciate it.”

The Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal is to support the Parish of San Antonio which is in the Moquegua region of southern Peru.

The mission to build a parish began in October 1996 under the care of Father Danny O’Sullivan, a priest of the Clifton Diocese, and the St James Society who is originally from Bath. At present 3,000 families live there with an estimated population of 20,000 and more families arrive all the time.

During a pastoral visit to Peru in 2005, the people of the Parish asked Bishop Declan for help from the people of Clifton Diocese to assist in building a Church for this new and thriving Parish. Land has been set aside and plans drawn up. San Antonio was declared to be a parish by the local Bishop in November 2004, but the people have no hope of ever building a Church without help.

Father Danny O’Sullivan said, “I feel very humble that the people of the Bristol East Deanery have decided so generously to support me and my poor community. I thank you for your support and I salute your missionary spirit. In the new church your names will be written large and more importantly they will be written large in the House of our Heavenly Father.”

The Bristol East Deanery is made of the following parishes: St Lawrence, Chipping Sodbury; St Paul, Yate; St Augustine of Canterbury, Downend; St Nicholas of Tolentino, Easton; St Joseph, Fishponds; St John Fisher, Frenchay; Our Lady of Lourdes and St Bernadette, Kingswood; St Patrick, Redfield.
