Easter 2006 - Celebrations at Clifton Cathedral

Clifton Cathedral has published its Easter Events Calendar. Copies of the timetable for Holy Week celebrations will be given out at all Masses in the Cathedral this weekend.

In his introduction to the Easter Events Calendar Right Reverend Declan Lang, the Bishop of Clifton writes, “I would like to invite you to Clifton Cathedral to celebrate the events of Holy Week which lead us to Easter, the most important Christian Feast. In his book ‘The Mystery of the Cross’ Cardinal Basil Hume wrote:

“As far as I know no one has adequately and conclusively explained the existence of evil in our world. I do know however that the answer is to be found in looking at the crucified Christ. There is the book I must study to find the answer. There I shall find that Word made flesh, God who became man, suffering and dying on a cross. Slowly we see, and then only dimly, that in suffering of all kinds there is new life to be found and therefore hope. It would not have been so if Christ had not risen from the dead.”

“In the midst of busy lives which can become confusing, or in the midst of lonely lives which can be lived in fear, the crucified and risen Christ comes that we might have life and have it to the full.

“I hope that you will be able to share in our celebrations this Holy Week and Easter so that together we can proclaim “Christ is Risen, Alleluia!””

The Easter celebration actually extends over three days. Starting on the evening of Maundy Thursday with the washing of feet and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper the celebration continues on Good Friday with the Passion of Jesus which leads us onwards to celebrate Easter life as the Easter Candle is lit at the start of the Easter Vigil when the Mass of the Resurrection is celebrated.

Copies of the Easter Events Calendar are available from the Cathedral on Pembroke Road and can be requested by telephoning 0117 973 8411. To download copies please visit www.cliftondiocese.com.
