For the last four years a group of fifteen quilting friends have enjoyed a weekend of sewing and creativity together in the peaceful situation of Bristol’s Emmaus House. A weekend exhibition of their creativity is planned for this summer.
The event is organised and led by Pat Nicholls, who has long connections with the Emmaus House. She was a pupil there when it was La Retraite School, and her aunt, Sister Helen Dunn was one of the first headmistresses at the prep school when it moved to Emmaus House.
Some of the friends who retreat to sew are Pat’s students, and others are patchwork friends, from near and far.
At their retreat last year they made a small hanging for the group room. They also decided that they would run a quilt show at Emmaus House in July this year to raise funds for Emmaus House. The group have a temporary name ‘Quilters Assorted’, a name which sums up the skills of the members of the group, from two or three professionals to new students.
The exhibition will include some bed quilts, wall hangings, small pieces of work, and even a church banner or two, designed and created by ‘Quilters Assorted’. Some of the pieces are inspired by the gardens and surroundings of Clifton, where Emmaus House is situated.
As well as a display in the hall, weather providing, quilts will be hung in the garden, in which visitors can sit and enjoy teas and lunches from the restaurant. Admission is just £3.00.
