A book packed full of episcopal facts has been written and published by a local parishioner.
‘The Roman Catholic Hierarchy in England, Wales and Scotland - A Biographical History’ is available now for just £15.00.
The book has been thoroughly researched by Bristol parishioner Christopher Larsen who has also published the comprehensive collection of names, dates and locations.
Christopher told
cliftondiocese.com, “Over the course of the last five years or so, I have carried out research into all former and current Roman Catholic bishops in England, Wales and Scotland since 1850. My work, running to a total of 210 pages, has now been published and I hope that it can now be circulated to as wide an audience as possible.
“The attempts to catalogue the significant events of all Roman Catholic diocesan bishops who have been in office since the Restoration of the Catholic Hierarchy in England and Wales in 1850. There are further chapters relating to the diocesan bishops of Scotland, since the Restoration of the Catholic Hierarchy there in 1878. The work has developed over a number of years into a comprehensive reference guide to nearly 300 men, ordained in the episcopal order, who have given their live in service to the local diocesan Church.
“Each diocese is taken in turn, first giving a brief description of the history of that territory, details of the province to which it belongs, as well as a definition of its geographical location. There follows a concise biographical list of all diocesan and auxiliary bishops who have ministered in that see including the bishops' full names, any known qualifications, place and date of birth, places and dates of presbyteral and episcopal ordination, translation and retirement, followed by place and date of death and subsequent burial if appropriate. The last entry of each diocese shows the current incumbent with any of his auxiliary bishops. In addition, the papal nuncios, bishops to the armed forces and the Ukrainian exarchs are treated in a similar way.
“Towards the end of the book, there is a quick-reference guide to the hierarchies in England and Wales and Scotland at the present time, followed by a more complete address list of all living bishops, including those who once served in Great Britain but who are now retired or living abroad.
“It is hoped that this reference book may be of particular interest to diocesan archivists and yearbook editors, but will also appeal to those involved in the general history and origins of the dioceses in Great Britain.
“I have drawn on a wide variety of sources in an effort to organise the information presented as completely, concisely and consistently as possible. Although most of the information listed here may indeed be found in other publications and on various websites, this book brings together all that information into one place of reference.
“As this book records the episcopal milestones of the last century and a half, it also stands as a respectful testament to those bishops who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith who continue to inspire and encourage their living successors in the Roman Catholic Church in Britain today.”
