Faith Alive - a report from Churchdown

29 July 2008

The Clifton Diocese for young people held earlier this month was a great success.  Many young people from throughout the West of England celebrated their ‘Faith Alive’.  cliftondiocese.com now brings you a report from Emily Rayfield a young parishioner from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Churchdown who took part in ‘Faith Alive’.

Twelve young people and three leaders from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Churchdown had the opportunity to go to the ‘Faith Alive’ event at St Bede’s College in Bristol. The day started with a welcome session in which we got to find out about the other young people from around the diocese and watched a special report from World Youth Day.

This was followed by some fantastic workshop sessions. The young people from Our Lady’s tried a range of activities but by far the most popular was the drum workshop. This was a fun and exciting workshop where we learnt to play different notes and try different rhythms. Everyone was very enthusiastic and hopefully there were not too many bruised fingers after the event! The day ended with a lively Mass celebrated by Bishop Declan. Here is what some of our young people had to say about their day at Faith Alive:

“I liked the dance. We did a dance about the Holy Spirit and the apostles. I’d like to see Father Kevin do dancing one day!” - Joanne.

“Drama was very nice. We went into a circle and said our names. Then we had to say three words to describe ourselves. Lucy said crazy, lively and funny, Michael said argumentative, shy and sporting and I described myself as funny, happy and animal caring. For the mass we did a play about Jesus telling people about the things he had done. I really enjoyed it and I liked performing in front of all the people.” - Jahnar.

“The drumming was really good. It was different and you don’t usually get to do that kind of thing.” - Sarah.

“The drumming was good but I found it a bit confusing!” - Lucy.

“I enjoyed the drumming. It was good to learn a new skill.” - Naomi.

“Everyone in the music group was mad! The teacher was really enthusiastic. We learnt songs for the Mass.” - Ellen.

“The art workshop was really good. We drew pictures on glasses with special pens. We put candles in them for the Mass.” - Katie.

Everyone agreed that it was a great day and many of the young people are now really keen to go to World Youth Day in future. The young people are grateful to the late Sheila Navarro who left a bequest for the youth of the parish, which helped to enable them to take part in this wonderful day.
