Faith is Alive Amongst our Young

19 July 2008

Young people from around the Clifton Diocese enthusiastically took part in a special event today.  Faith Alive gave people aged from 11 to 18 an exciting opportunity to explore - through a variety of workshops - what faith means.  And they took up the opportunity with great enthusiasm.

The faith-filled gathering at St Bede's Catholic College in Bristol meant young people met other young Catholics from around the diocese - making new friends and celebrating together.

Take a look at the pictures in the image gallery on the right and listen to our special podcast in the multimedia panel.  The joyfulness of the young people comes through loud and clear.

Many parishes from all counties in our diocese were represented by young people affirming their faith.  Although not all parishes could take this opportunity - the vital work with young Catholics continues to bear fruit within our local Church.  Listening to the young people at Faith Alive confirms that to have missed the special day would have been a disappointment.

Bishop Declan was at the day-long event and led a workshop on the life of a bishop.  He candidly fielded wide-ranging and perceptive questions.  There's more from him in our podcast report.

Other workshops were led by Clifton Diocese CAFOD Manager, Tony Vassallo and Sound of Many Waters inspiration, Mary Colwell, who talked about the environment and faith.  The appetite for these topics was clear from the numbers taking part in the workshops.  A total of nine different workshops took place, including drumming - which attracted many with musical interests.  The art groups created their own prayers and illustrated them beautifully.  You can listen to some these prayers in our podcast report.  The depth of faith expressed by the young people was clear and is sure to be shared with both old and young when they return to their parishes.

A special link-up with Australia was enjoyed when an audio message was received from Rachel Manning - one of the Clifton Diocese World Youth Day communications officer - in Sydney.  The message was played to a packed hall just as the day began.  You can hear it in our multimedia panel on the right.

Bishop Declan celebrated Mass to conclude the Faith Alive event.  The liturgy included examples of the creative expression the young people had developed throughout the day.
