Father King’s Conversations: James Patrick

1 July 2009

Father Robert King, the Catholic Chaplain to the University of Bristol and Clifton Diocese Vocations Director, continues his weekly podcast series exploring faith and culture today (1 July).  A new episode of ‘Father King’s Conversations’ will be online every Wednesday only on cliftondiocese.com.  Father Robert is in conversation with leading thinkers and local people who enrich our lives through their cultural work.  Today Father Robert speaks with James Patrick.

In the third episode of my new podcast series I spoke with James Patrick, a barrister, recorder and priest.  Like most of us, James Patrick finds that there is no easy answer to the question, ‘what is truth?’ Rather than limiting himself to searching for a single answer, James has allowed his quest for truth to be guided by an overwhelming passion for justice. He explains his work as both a defence and prosecuting barrister, and outlines the ways in which the many truths in a single story allow him a particular insight into the human condition. Although he often finds it difficult to remain detached, James has learned to draw upon these experiences in his work as a sentencing recorder, where he balances justice with compassion, and endeavours to direct the person sentenced away from a life of crime.

An ordained Anglican priest, James feels that his work and faith are closely interwoven. Both his faith and his love of justice drive him to search for the truth. His work is a form of ministry. James is also deeply committed to relationship in other forms. He enjoys sharing food and wine with friends.

You can listen to our podcast in the multimedia panel on the right.  Next week I’m joined by Dr Josie Dolan, a senior lecturer in film studies.
