Focus on Family Life and Marriage

30 July 2009

The Clifton Diocese has appointed a Marriage and Family Life Coordinator.  Anne-Marie Sparrow has taken up the voluntary position.

Bishop Declan said: “I am delighted that Anne-Marie Sparrow has agreed to take up the position of Marriage and Family Life Coordinator for our diocese.  This is an important need identified in our pastoral guidelines ‘Called to be a People of Hope’.

“The family is at the very centre of both the Church and society.  Family life needs all the support that we can give.”

Anne-Marie is married to Colin.  They were married at St Nicholas of Tolentino in Easton, Bristol 38 years ago and have three children, a girl and two boys.  Both the boys are married and they have given us five wonderful grandchildren.

Anne-Marie said: “We take great joy in our family and love being with them whenever we can.

“I trained as a teacher and for many years taught in Bristol schools.  After teaching I worked for nine years with the Sion Community.  I worked in parishes and some primary schools. I also trained as a counsellor.

“I look forward to my new role as a voluntary Marriage and Family Life Coordinator in our diocese.  The national Marriage and Family Life Office was set up by the Bishop’s Conference in response to ‘Listening 2004’ - a survey sent out to all parishes in England and Wales.  Perhaps you remember it? As coordinator my role is to pass on information received from the national office and to feedback what is happening here in our diocese. I will be building up contacts in all parishes and deaneries as soon as possible to get this work under way.

“One way we can move forward as a diocese is to find out more about ‘Home is a Holy Place’.  Please visit the website.

“The national office for Marriage and Family Life issues an ebulletin every month.  It’s easy to sign up to on the Bishops’ Conference website.  It’s full of information and ideas to try out in our own family or as a parish family to celebrate together.  Perhaps you could print off a copy and ask to put it on your parish notice board for those who don’t have access to a computer to read!

“I look forward to visiting our parishes throughout Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, and help in ensuring family life continues to the foundation of the Church.”
