Forest City Choir Perform in Gloucester

28 May 2009

St Peter's Church in Gloucester hosted the world famous Waldorf Choir from Forest City in Iowa, USA.

The talented singers are recognised as one of the oldest collegiate a cappella choirs in America. The choir tours annually throughout the United States and abroad about every fourth year. The choir is conducted by Blair Buffington, a native Iowan who has extensive experience in directing choirs at high school, collegiate, church and community levels The Waldorf choir is deeply committed to its mission of praising God through song. The choir performs an inspiring repertory of sacred music spanning the past six centuries; performing a variety of music ranging from sacred music by Handel, Palestrina and Tallis to madrigals and folk music. Their UK tour includes singing at York Minster and Bath Abbey but St Peter’s is their only Catholic Church on this tour

Canon Bernard Massey Parish Priest of St Peter’s tells us that he was able to get the choir to come to Gloucester because the Catholic Chaplain of the Waldorf College is a priest friend of his. Father Henry Huber had a summer student placement in the Clifton Diocese with Canon Bernard in the summer of 2001.

Terri Tyreman Chair of the Friends of St Peter’s who hosted the event said: “The choir was truly magnificent and the sheer joy of the young people was a treat to behold. Gloucester has a good musical tradition and the Waldorf Choir will be remembered here for a long time.”
