Friday Penance

9 September 2011

Each and every Friday is a little glimpse of Good Friday. Our Director of Adult Education Father Christopher Whitehead talks about Friday penance in a podcast as we look ahead to the first anniversary of the Holy Father historic visit.

The bishops of England and Wales believe it is important that all the faithful again be united in a common, identifiable act of Friday penance because they recognise that the virtue of penitence is best acquired as part of a common resolve and common witness.

The bishops have decided to re-establish the practice that this penance should be fulfilled simply by abstaining from meat and by uniting this to prayer. Those who cannot or choose not to eat meat as part of their normal diet should abstain from some other food of which they regularly partake. This comes into effect from Friday 16 September - the first day of the anniversary of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI.

As well as listening to Father Christopher’s podcast in the multimedia panel on the right you can find out more about Friday penance at the Bishops’ Conference website and the official papal visit website.
