Frome children make their voices heard in the fight against poverty

Children from St Louis Catholic Primary School in Frome are releasing their own CD to help Make Poverty History – in a Bob Geldof style attempt to use music to highlight the campaign.

They’re giving their first performance of Let’s make Poverty History to David Heath, MP for Somerton and Frome at 11.00 am on Friday 27 May at St Louis School, Welshmill Lane, Frome.

Year Four teacher at the school, Katherine Mitchell wrote the song after a visit from a volunteer from CAFOD– the Catholic aid agency that works with many of the poorest people on earth.

She says that the song came to her by accident, "I didn’t intend to compose a song. The issues went around in my head and the melody evolved around the natural rhythm of the words. I ended up with lyrics that supported the Make Poverty History campaign and the UN Millennium Development Goals – but in a way that children could understand."

The pupils were so keen to use the song to highlight the Make Poverty History campaign that they decided to produce their own CD. Frome Media Arts College agreed to help out and the CD was produced at minimal cost. A DVD is also being produced that combines the song, images from around the world and voiceovers from the children, which it is hoped will be shown at the Glastonbury music festival.
Eleven year old Jamie Friel from St Louis said that he hoped that the song would reach world leaders at the G8 Summit in July, "The most powerful people in the world are getting together at Gleneagles to talk about world poverty. I hope that they listen to us and hear our song."

Katherine Mitchell says it’s important that children are involved in the Make Poverty History campaign, "Children are our future. They are tomorrow’s politicians and decision makers. So it’s important that the voices of children are heard in this adult-led campaign."
The Make Poverty History campaign is being led by a coalition of over 400 charities and organisations. It’s calling for the government and international decision makers to tackle global poverty through trade justice, debt cancellation and more effective aid.

CAFOD is a leading member of the coalition, and is working in partnership with St Louis Primary School to highlight the fight against poverty. The CD will be sold at the school for £2.99 and the money raised will go to CAFOD’s work in the developing world.
