High Sheriff Update

14 April 2009

Cathedral parishioner Dr Tim Chambers is the High Sheriff of the City and County of Bristol this year.  cliftondiocese.com will bring news of Dr Tim and his activities as High Sheriff throughout his year in office.  In our first report we follow the High Sheriff to Ashfield Young Offenders Institution.

Dr Tim visited Ashfield for a briefing from the director and tour of the establishment. It houses about 300 young men, mainly from Bristol, the diocesan area (such as Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire) and the South of England.

Dr Tim told cliftondiocese.com: “Depriving a young person of their liberty is an extreme measure, not taken lightly.  The atmosphere and culture were so positive, emphasising both education for future employment or vocational courses and welfare of the young people and their care and resettlement after they leave.  There is a vigorous and outreaching chaplaincy drawing on many denominations and faiths.  It was a humbling experience.  We often have bidding prayers for prisoners: we should also remember those who care for them and help them rebuild their lives.”

Follow the links back through our stories to find out about Dr Tim, his Chaplain and hear our podcast recorded at Mass on the morning of first day as High Sheriff.  You can see pictures from that Mass in the image gallery on the right.
