High Sheriff’s Military Gatherings

30 April 2009

Cathedral parishioner Dr Tim Chambers is the High Sheriff of the City and County of Bristol this year.  cliftondiocese.com is bringing you news of Dr Tim and his activities as High Sheriff throughout his year in office.  In our second report we follow the High Sheriff as he highlights the role of the military.

The Army Presentation Team visited Bristol recently and gave an evening of information through film and personal experiences at the Arnolfini.  A wide section of the Bristol community was invited, packed the auditorium and contributed through a lively question-and-answer session.

Dr Tim told cliftondiocese.com: “The purpose was not recruiting, rather to educate us about the life, training and hardships of the men and women who serve us in HM Forces.  Furthermore, when they and their families leave the military they need to resettle in their communities with housing, jobs, health services and schools. The readjustment can be challenging. Some, sadly, have mental and other health problems and a few become homeless and others turn to crime. High Sheriffs are involved with crime reduction, hence my further interest.

“This has been a military month: I attended Sovereign’s Parade and the Passing Out of officer recruits - including my nephew James - at Sandhurst.  It was impressive, especially when they march through the doors and into the Old College followed by the Parade Commander on his horse.

“I visited the charming Roman Catholic Chapel, newly renovated following an appeal, before the packed commissioning Service held in the larger Royal Memorial Chapel and led by Father Fava, RC Chaplain.

“Clifton Diocese has many military connections: Cathedral Dean Canon Alan Finley was, and his predecessor Monsignor Canon Robert Corrigan is, a serving member of the Royal Army Chaplains Department; Bristol has several Territorial Units sending personnel on operational deployment and we have parishes on the Salisbury Plain Training Area and in other military areas. Let us remember in our prayers our service people, their families and their chaplains.
