Holy Footsteps: St Alexander Briant

24 January 2009

Our new saintly series of podcasts continues today.  ‘Holy Footsteps’ brings to life amazing stories of saints associated with the Clifton Diocese.  Each Saturday this month we travel around the diocese - to locations that are significant to the saints and others who feature in the series.  Often we’ll take you to places where our holy heritage is still clear to see.

Today’s ‘Holy Footsteps’ episode takes us to West Harptree in Somerset.  We’re in the company of the Assistant Clifton Diocese Archivist Gill Hogarth details the life of St Alexander Briant.  The episode comes from St Mary’s Anglican parish church in the village from where Gill us through St Alexander Briant’s life and martyrdom.

Listen to ‘Holy Footsteps’ in the multimedia panel on the right for much more about this Jesuit martyr.

Last week's podcast about St Oliver Plunkett is still online.

Our concluding ‘Holy Footsteps’ episode will be available from cliftondiocese.com next Saturday (31 January), so join us around the Clifton Diocese as we find out more about our holy heritage.

Gillian's reseach and presentation is so good. It is such an interesting presentation which is a memorial today to those young men who were so steadfast in their faith.

There is a stained glass window of St Alexander Briant in St Francis Church, Nailsea. When the church was being designed I was the Parish Priest and in addition to a window depicting St Francis of Assisi I wanted a second window depicting a local saint. St Alexander Briant came to mind and Dom Phipip Jebb OSB and Dom Aidan Bellinger OSB (Downside Abbey) gave help and advice on what St Alexander Briant looked like. Both windows were donated by the Bristol Catenian Circles.
