Indian Bishop Visits Clifton

Bishop Declan welcomed an ecumenical guest when Most Reverend Joseph Mar Koorilose Metropolitan of the Malabar Independent Syrian Church paid a visit to Bristol.

Bishop Declan presented his guest with an inscribed copy of Father Tony Harding’s (Clifton Diocesan Archivist) book on the history of the Clifton Diocese, together with a framed picture of Clifton Cathedral’s processional cross. Most Reverend Joseph Mar Koorilose gave Bishop Declan a gift of a carved elephant and picture of the Malabar Independent Syrian Church Cathedral.

Bishop Declan said, “It was good to welcome the Metropolitan Joseph Mar Koorilose to Bristol and the Clifton Diocese. We spoke about the Church in Europe and in India with special reference to education and interfaith relations.”

The Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal was among topics discussed at the meeting. Most Reverend Joseph Mar Koorilose has experience of building new churches as his own Church is very mission conscious. He assured Bishop Declan that he would keep the important project in his prayers.

The meeting was arranged by Father Peter Hawkins from Taunton, who said, “Most Reverend Mar Koorilose is a charismatic and very popular Metropolitan Bishop whose influence goes for beyond his own small denomination. About seven years ago he had a major stroke and was unconscious for days. Against all the odds he recovered.

“He’s now called Valiya Metropolitan. Valiya means senior. He travels throughout the world including this visit to the UK.”

The Malabar Independent Syrian Church (Thozhiyur Sabha) is of Syriac Orthodox tradition and is based on the Malabar Coast in South India. It was founded by Kattumangattu Abraham Mar Koorilose, Metropolitan of Malankara in 1772. He was consecrated metropolitan by Mar Gregorios of Jerusalem at Mattancherry. He could not live in the state of Travancore because of the opposition from the Church leaders. He went to Malabar and settled at Anjoor in Thrissur Dt. A local chieftain of Anjoor Hydrosekutty Moopan was impressed by his devotion and donated a coconut grove to the metropolitan. The headquarters of the Church was established at that location. Most Reverend Joseph Mar Koorilose is the fifteenth bishop in succession. He was ordained a priest on 1 March 1978 and consecrated bishop on 27 August 1986.

Most Reverend Joseph Mar Koorilose will be interviewed on BBC Radio Bristol's Sangam show this sunday at around 6.15 pm. Sangam is presented by Alex Lewis and in on air from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm. You can listen on 95.5FM or online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol.

Alex said, "We have a wide variety of listeners - and a very strong Asian Christian community in Bristol - who I'm sure, will be delighted to hear from the Bishop."
