Last Saturday (4 March) saw the launch of the much anticipated “Anne
Frank + you” exhibition at The Pilgrim Place, Temple Church, Taunton.
Months of fund raising and organisation brought together the peoples
and communities that make up Taunton and beyond for this groundbreaking
exhibition. The planning culminated with over 400 people together for
the poignant and powerful launch.
The evening comprised poetry, drama, music and dance to reflect the
horror of the Holocaust and the extremes of human nature. As flaws in
the human condition lead to repeated acts of genocide through history
and to localised violence resulting from hatred, we have the capacity
to love. Anne Frank’s diaries give a terrifying focus to the immense
number of those systemically murdered in the Holocaust as they each
become real historical individuals in our minds.
Winner of the Anne Frank Prize for Bravery, Saranda Bogujevci, spoke
about the murder of her family and friends in Kosovo and her return to
give evidence at the trial of their murder before a Serbian judge.
Friends of Lloyd Fouracre, who was tragically killed in an incident in
Taunton on the eve of his 18th birthday, spoke about the night he died.
They were joined by Lloyd’s brother Adam whose power point presentation
left no doubt of the devastating effects that hatred has on people.
The aim of the “Anne Frank + you” exhibition is to help school
children, and others, to reflect on the evil of the Holocaust and how
seemingly small acts of hatred and violence have devastating
consequences in our own lives. Over four thousand school children have
already registered to visit. Have you?
