Norman Kember, the Christian pacifist who was kidnapped in Iraq and
then released after a Special Forces raid, is to speak at a Salisbury
college, where Bishop Declan is a trustee, on Tuesday 8 May.
Norman Kember was held for three-and-a-half months in a small room,
along with two Canadian peace activists, and the American Tom Fox, who
was later executed by the kidnappers.
Mr Kember has recently published a book describing his experiences
entitled Hostage in Iraq, published by Darton, Longman & Todd. In
it he describes his feelings of fear, loneliness, boredom, and at one
point even contemplates suicide. The book is described as ‘moving,
gripping and surprising…testament to the enduring power of the human
spirit.’
Norman Kember’s talk begins at 12 noon, and will be followed by a book
signing and light refreshments in the Sarum College Common Room.
