Joys and Stresses of Modern Family Life

If you interact with families in the course of your work or voluntary activities, you will no doubt be aware that families now come in all shapes and sizes – and that each brings its own needs and challenges. And if you are part of a family, then will no doubt also be aware of how the pressures of modern life can strain family relationships to their limits.

The Ammerdown Conference and Retreat Centre are running two courses that could make your interactions both with and within families a lot easier – and lead to happier lives all way round!

On Wednesday 24 May, the Centre will host a one day course on ‘Different Families – Different Needs’ that will enable participants to respond more compassionately, more positively and more effectively to the needs of the families they encounter and work with. It will be led by Liz Gardner and Christine Tuffnell from the organisation Care for the Family.

“It’s about drawing alongside, being a source of encouragement and strength, helping families that are hurting to begin to move on with their lives.”, says Liz Gardner. There’ll be resources to take away or buy, advice on further training that can be accessed, and information about relevant organisations that can help. At just £35.00 for the day, all inclusive, this is an opportunity not to be missed to be trained and helped by experts.

The other relevant course is a weekend course to be held on Friday 19 May, 6.00 pm, to Sunday 21 May, 2.00 pm on the theme of Effective Communication. It is an absolute must for anyone seeking a happier life, better health and happiness, and more satisfying relationships at home and at work – be it with one’s partner, children, friends, colleagues or neighbours.

Think about tensions or conflicts that have made your life difficult or brought you close to breaking point. How many of these were down to a simple misunderstanding? And how often do little ‘niggles’ or unfortunate remarks made at the wrong time escalate into full blown rows or even lasting fall-outs? All this could be avoided if only we learnt to communicate better –for example by learning to listen properly, read body-language, wait before jumping to conclusions, or pause to check that what we understood is what was meant.

This highly interactive and fun weekend course will help transform you into the excellent communicator whom you long to be. It will be led by Chris Porter, an experienced life coach who works with a wide range of clients including managers, teachers, lawyers, youth workers, young people, health professionals and parents. She feels passionately about people living happier and more fulfilling lives. “I have seen my own life transformed by changing my thinking and communication patterns. I know that, with a bit of coaching, everyone can achieve the same.”
