Following its sell-out world premiere in earlier this year, Karl Jenkins - arguably our most popular living composer - is touring his latest work, ‘
Stabat Mater’, around eight iconic concert venues this autumn. He’ll be in Clifton Cathedral on Friday 14 November at 7.30 pm.
Known for looking to other cultures for inspiration, Karl has this time taken the traditional Christian Stabat Mater text - already set to music by such diverse composers as Palestrina, Haydn and Verdi - and infused it with Middle Eastern influences. As well as the Christian text (sung in English and Latin), Karl has incorporated ancient Middle Eastern writings which are sung in Aramaic and Greek.
The performance uses a traditional orchestra and choir augmented by ancient percussion instruments and the intriguing duduk - a traditional woodwind instrument of Armenian origins, and features soloist Belinda Sykes from EMI’s best-selling CD of the work. Rhythmic and vital, emotive and compelling, this is music encompassing all human emotion which will in turn enliven your senses and touch your soul.
You can hear composer Karl Jenkins in conversation with Sandy Burnett on his new work for orchestra, choir and soloists ‘Stabat Mater’. Karl’s conversation is his first podcast for EMI Classics.
