We hear from local Sisters of La Retraite who played an important life-giving role following the earthquake in Chile.
Chile’s second city Concepción was hit by a massive earthquake in February.
cliftondiocese.com meets Sister Susana Campos Cabrera whose La Retraite community was able to supply vital fresh water to thousands of people in the aftermath of the devastation, thanks to a well in the community’s garden. We also meet Sister Mary Bellekom who’s recently moved to Bristol having worked in Chile for 12 years.
In our podcast, which is available in the multimedia panel on the right, Sister Susana vividly describes the severity of the earthquake and the destruction it caused to the coastal nation’s fishing towns. It’s clear that the fresh water supplied by the La Retraite community in the aftermath of the earthquake made a huge difference to local people in Concepción.
We had hoped to meet Sister Susana in Bristol as she was due to be at
Emmaus House for an important meeting of sisters from around the world. Unfortunately due to the volcanic cloud she was prevented from travelling to England. However that did not deter determined Sister Susana who told us her story via Skype from Galway where she’s visiting other La Retraite sisters.
There’s much more about the Sisters of La Retraite in Concepción in a recent report on the
Alliance of Religions and Conservation’s website.
