Lord Mayor on his Bike at St Teresa’s

27 May 2008

St Teresa’s Primary School in Monks Park, Bristol, recently enjoyed a ‘Bike–to-School’ day as part of their ‘Eco Week’.  Staff and pupils were encouraged to cycle or scoot to school, reducing car journeys and emissions.

A total of 85 pupils cycled or scooted to school, as well as six members of staff. Extra bike racks were hired for the day - just as well as the bike shelter only houses 12 bikes!

Cycle related activities were organised for the day.  The Lord Mayor of Bristol joined us for a special ‘Bike Breakfast’, when the whole school gathered together in the sunshine.  Slow bike races were held between staff and pupils (who can ride the slowest without putting their feet down!) with pupils winning every time.

Rinkydink, a fabulous contraption made from old cycles, was on display in the playground.  Every child had the chance for a ride on Rinkydink, which generated electricity as the pedals are turned - powering a sound system.

Dr Bike took up residence in the playground and checked every bike.  Some needed minor repairs, which Dr Bike was able to fix, but most had a clean bill of health.  Dr Bike even wrote out a few prescriptions!

The junior classes were given some cycle skills tips by trainers from Bristol City Council.  More in-depth training will be available to the pupils later in the term.
The sun shone all day and everyone had a great time.  The cycle shelter has been a little more crowded since the ‘Bike–to-School’ day so hopefully the green message is hitting home!
