Loving the Eucharist, Prayer and the People

31 May 2009

Bristol parishioners from St Augustine’s in Downend and St John Fisher in Frenchay came together in St Augustine’s to share with Father Frank Bermingham his Mass of induction as Parish Priest of the two East Bristol parishes.

St Augustine’s was full with Father Frank’s family and friends as well as several priests from around our diocese.  These included Vicar General Monsignor Canon Gabriel Leyden and Cathedral Dean Canon Alan Finley.

Deacon Michael Belt read the letter of induction written by Bishop Declan and Father Frank was presented with the keys to the parish.

The homily was given by Dean of Bristol East Father Gregory Grant.  He spoke of the difficulty these days of finding a Parish Priest for every parish.  He went on to say that his prayers were answered when he met Father Frank over bread rolls at a luncheon they both attended.  Father Gregory said that Father Frank had the gift of listening to people and asking the right questions.

At the end of Mass Father Frank thanked everyone for coming and said that his three loves were the Eucharist, prayer and the people.  He said that we are all unique creations of God and must use our talents to serve Him.

Everyone then retired to the school hall where a buffet had been provided by parishioners.  Father Frank cut his cake which was made in the shape of a snooker table.  Those of you who know Father Frank will know that he is a great fan if the game.

Father Frank brings many attributes with him to our parishes and I am sure that we will all gain from his time with us.  As St Francis of Assisi said: “Where there is doubt, let there be faith” and with Father Frank among us we will have plenty of faith.

Although not a parishioner from Downend, but in the deanery; I attended Father Frank's induction. It was very moving, particularly to witness Father Frank’s sincere commitment to the teaching of the Gospels. We are lucky to have such members of the clergy who seek to serve their parishioners and be open to all. Thank you for your hospitality. Father Frank: May God bless and keep you and your parish from all harm. You are a good example for any young man wishing to commit himself to those teachings. Best wishes for the future.
