Many Tongues, One Faith – Clifton’s Ground Breaking Event

Last Saturday, (25 November), over 100 people gathered at St Bede’s Catholic College, in Lawrence Weston, Bristol, to attend the ground-breaking ‘Many Tongues, One Faith’ conference.

The special event was organised by the Clifton Department for Adult Education and Evangelisation and the Clifton Diocese Committees for Ongoing Formation of Priests and Health and Healing.

The event explored the questions raised by the changing nature of our parishes following many immigrants joining our communities. Over the past few years many parishes have experienced a new and growing diversity as people from India, Africa and Eastern Europe have joined– bringing a new enthusiasm for faith and prayer as well as issues relating to culture, justice and human rights.

The keynote speaker was Monsignor Keith Barltrop, Director of the Catholic Agency to Support Evangelisation (CASE). He spoke of one overarching question: How can we create evangelising communities where four things can happen – listening and valuing, the needs of the people are served, we allow ourselves to be evangelised and we work together in evangelisation – learning from each other and working in partnership?

In addition to the keynote talk a number of workshops exploring the theme were held after which participants enjoyed a multicultural lunch followed by a liturgy which included African music, Indian song and readings in a number of languages.

In his summing up Bishop Declan Lang spoke of the great value of this conference in raising awareness of so many of these gifts and challenges, along with the need to consider all these issues in our planning for the future.
