Minehead’s Catholic parish has created a colourful calendar featuring their own photographic talent to raise funds to help build a church in Peru.
Father Michael Thomas, Parish Priest of Minehead’s Sacred Heart, told
cliftondiocese.com, “Together the parish decided we’d print a calendar for 2009. We’re aiming to help Somerset priest Father Danny O’Sullivan who ministers in the
San Antonio parish in Moquegua, southern Peru. The parish over there is trying to build its own church, because they currently celebrate Mass in a chapel made of reeds.
“It’s appropriate that in raising funds to build a church we celebrate our own church which is unusual if not unique. It’s rare that all the windows in a church are made in stained glass - so that’s what our colourful new calendar focuses on. The windows were installed nearly 100 years ago and reflect a range of saints, and events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“The church is considered to be a very beautiful small church and could be described as the Victorian gem of Exmoor. Minehead is on the edge of Exmoor and the Catholic parish covers over one third of the Moor.
“Last year our Christmas fundraising resulted in £1145 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Some of our parishioners are talented painters and their work was put on cards and sold to raise the funds.
“This year it’s talented photographer Judy Hollier whose pictures we’re using in the calendar. We’ve already sold over ten per cent of the calendars. We hope to sell 500 priced at £5.99 and raise at least £1000 for Father Danny’s parish in Peru. In addition with our harvest lunch, card sales and other collections and donations we hope we might raise a total of over £1500. We hope that, us celebrating having such a wonderful building to come together in, will in a small way help fellow Catholics across the world in Peru to eventually have a church building rather than their reed chapel.
“If you can’t pick up a calendar in Minehead, you can purchase one by sending a cheque for £6.60 to Sacred Heart Church, 8 Townsend Road, Minehead TA24 5RG. And we’ll send a copy to you as soon as we can. Cheques should be made payable to Minehead Catholic Church.”
Father Danny O’Sullivan in Peru has heard about the Minehead fundraising. He said, “Bishop Declan very generously launched the Clifton Diocese Peru Appeal on Maundy Thursday 2006. The appeal ended on Maundy Thursday 2007 but donations continue to pour in. I doubted that we would have enough funds to finish the building of the parish church of San Antonio but the generosity of the people of the Clifton Diocese and in this case the parish of Minehead overwhelms me.
“Father Michael and your very wonderful parishioners many, many, thanks.”
