This weekend sees several significant occasions for the cause of the Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman.
cliftondiocese.com explores the great man’s link with Gloucestershire. Cheltenham-based Newman scholar, Hugh Greenhalf has recorded a special podcast outlining Newman’s connections with the county.
The Vigil of Reception for the remains of the Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801 to 1890) began in the imposing Upper Cloister Hall at the Birmingham Oratory yesterday (31 October) and continues today (1 November) from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm.
When visitors enter the Cloister Hall, situated on the busy Hagley Road in Birmingham, they are entering part of the buildings that Cardinal Newman would have known himself. The large hall was constructed as part of the provision made by the Fathers of the Oratory for their school, which the then Father John Henry Newman opened in May 1859.
Visitors have the opportunity to see a few physical remains of the best known English Churchman of the 19th century.
Tomorrow (2 November), at 11.00 am in the Birmingham Oratory, during the Solemn High Mass of All Saints the Casket Reliquary containing the remains of
John Henry Cardinal Newman will be placed in the Chapel of St Charles Borromeo. They will rest in this chapel while the step by step process towards Cardinal Newman’s Beatification continues in Rome.
