Father Bill McLoughlin OSM is looking forward to the start of term as
Catholic Chaplain to the University of Bath and Bath Spa University.
Catholic Students and friends are welcome to make contact with him and
to join in social events at the house and at all other venues featured
in Catholic Chaplaincy and CathSoc literature of both universities.
However, this year there’s a new development. The Catholic Chaplaincy
in Bath now has its own centre in the city - in the basement of the
Presbytery of St John the Evangelist Church on South Parade. It’s just
a three minute walk from the bus station.
James Fishlock of Father Bill’s SS Peter & Paul Parish has
spearheaded a task force of local young people and students, together
with the new assistant to the Catholic Chaplain, Rob Slinn, in getting
the Catholic Chaplaincy centre ready for use as a contact place for
students from both universities and young Catholics of Bath. The centre
will be open for drop-in sessions at various times throughout the
academic year. In addition, the centre will play host to a variety of
activities for Bath Catholic Youth. All the details will be listed on
the Chaplaincy website.
Father Bill has invited Rob Slinn, whom he has known throughout Rob’s
time at Bath, to play a part with him in the work of the Catholic
Chaplaincy this year. So look out for Rob along with Father Bill at
Freshers in both universities.
Rob graduated from the University of Bath in 2005, with a BSc in
politics with economics. During his time at university, he was active
with Cathsoc and was the first President of the student SVPSoc started
by Father Bill. In 2004 he won the Convocation Off Campus Award for the
undergraduate who makes “an outstanding contribution to the local
community”, starting a trend of Cathsoc winners that has continued
until this year.
After leaving university, Rob spent a year working for the UK’s leading
youth campaigning organisation, People & Planet. During his
employment he was involved in the recruitment and training of
volunteers, and in fundraising. In addition, he regularly delivered
workshops at higher and further education institutions throughout the
UK, encouraging students to support Fairtrade and adopt greener
lifestyles.
Sunday 8 October will see Mass celebrated by Bishop Declan in St John
the Evangelist’s Church, South Parade to ,mark the beginning of the
academic year. Mass begins at 6.30 pm.
