More from one of the most active primary schools - St Teresa’s in Monks Park, Bristol, as Alison Spurrell writes for
cliftondiocese.com. Having recently won an Evening Post competition to add an environmental project to our school the pupils and staff at St Teresa’s are very excited that their Octopus garden has finally arrived.
The building firm Leadbitter took the octopus idea on board and designed and built a fantastic garden. We chose an octopus shape so that children would be able to easily reach the whole growing area when working on the tentacles.
Each of the seven classes has their own tentacle, and a gardening club is being formed to work on the eighth one and the enormous head.
Years 1, 2 and 3 were asked to pose for a photograph, published in the Evening Post. By standing on a very tall stepladder, the photographer took a stunning picture, which has brought favourable comments from far and wide.
The reception class were the first to plant some flowers in their tentacle. They have also planted bulbs so that there will something to watch over the winter months.
