Parish Drummer to Feature in Sherrie Eugene’s New ITV Series

Sherrie Eugene will present a week of reports on ITV West News in the Spring, profiling the lives of five remarkable people from the west of England. The series will feature the choir leader at St Nicholas of Tolentino, Easton, Bristol, Alphonse Daudet Tona.

Alphonse, from the Cameroon, is a master drummer who not only plays the drums, but makes them as well. Alphonse runs workshops in the parish, made-up of people of around 45 different nationalities, to pass on the tradition of African music and signing. He specialises in both modern and traditional music from the continent.

Father Richard McKay, Parish Priest at St Nicholas of Tolentino said, “The music created by Alphonse and his choir has enriched our worship at St Nicholas a great deal. He is helping our parish to sing in a variety of African languages every Sunday. I am very pleased Sherrie will be featuring him.”

Sherrie a parishioner at St Nicholas of Tolentino said, “I am delighted to be working again for our regional commercial broadcaster. The people I’ll be filming for News are wonderful examples of the talent and dedication you come to expect from people in this part of the country. Viewers will know that I am a people’s person. The characters all have powerful stories to tell and I can’t wait to share their experiences – I’m sure the viewers will find it fascinating and uplifting.”

Sherrie, married with three young children, turned freelance at the end of 2002, after joining HTV West (now ITV West) in October 1982. One of her first presenting roles was signing programmes – including the News – for the deaf and hard of hearing, and co-presenting the community action series The Good Neighbour Show. Sherrie went on to front network series, as well as the regional flagship News programme.

Liz Hannam, ITV West Head of News, commented, “Sherrie came to us with this idea for a series and we couldn’t refuse. She’s an immensely recognisable and popular figure in the West, and engages well with people. The five characters she’s chosen are all remarkable larger than life individuals whose stories will make compelling television.”

In the series, Sherrie will also be profiling, Professional artist Jerry Limb, who is a Thalidomide victim; Child performance director Vic Eccleston; Outrageous fundraiser Saffire Burrowes; and Michele Eyv, who’s overcome breast cancer.
